Nice quote.
I don't know where you read it from, but this concept has been extensively used in the Hyperion cycle. If I remember the thing, Teilhard claimed that ultimately men could become their own god.
If you haven't read it and you should give a go to Hyperion. It's very nice and quiet clever.
